An overview of DENIVA’s programme focus 2006 -2010.

DENIVA as a national NGO network in 2006 celebrated eighteen (18) years of “networking for transformation”. Networking in a rapidly changing globalised and hi-tech environment where poverty issues are constantly defined and redefined, the forces against the poor keeping growing in sophistication has not come easily. The environment has continuously posed several challenges of growth and justification to DENIVA. And so DENIVA has had to constantly check and reflect on its relevance, sense of purpose, sense of direction as it strives to be the indigenous NGO network that propels the voice and concerns of several vulnerable poor men and women in Uganda in their fight against poverty. Through thick and thin DENIVA has continued to raise the issues, concerns of the poor and the policy options, and frameworks and challenged policy makers to listen, accept and endeavour to address the plight of the poor.

And so DENIVA’s recently concluded 5 year Strategic Plan for the period 2006 – 2010 is not only a manifestation of the high profile role that DENIVA wants to play in the development of the country – and beyond in the quest to uplift the standard of living of the poor, but is a consolidation of the work it has been carrying out especially in the last 3 years. It is also a planned approach to the increasing space in the operating environment to influence policies at different levels and to promote people centred policies and participation for effective poverty reduction and good governance. DENIVA’s gains, challenges and lessons learnt, provides it with renewed focus to contribute towards creating a fairer society that reflects people’s aspirations as well as achieving more visibility, recognition and strengthened partnerships with other development actors.

In a broad sense the programme focus 2006 – 2010 will be on poverty reduction, good governance, food security and hunger reduction, mitigating the negative impact of climatic change on the poor and advocating for a conducive NGO policy environment in Uganda.
