Information Centre

Background of the Resource Centre

The DENIVA General Assemblies of 1988 and 1989 re-affirmed the need to set up “an information and documentation centre in Kampala, and establishing Regional and District network contacts”. However, by 1990 , it was decided that what was needed was a Resource Centre rather than an information or documentation centre whose role appeared to be too limited in the context of a Network.

As a result, DENIVA Resource Centre started in January 1993 to support the justification for the existence of DENIVA especially as an organisation that facilitates NGOs to work together, to communicate with each other and to enhance NGO roles in national recovery and development.

Information/Resource Centre's Overall objective

The overall objective is to enhance development efforts (networking) and engage in meaningful planning and implementation of programmes and activities through acquiring, organising, sharing and facilitating the exchange of information.

The Role of the Information/Resource Centre in support of DENIVA programmes

All organisations must manage information just as all businesses must make profit, and storage of information is a part of the managing which facilitates an easier system of keeping-for-future reference or use.  Information/Resource Centres are part of this storage system, but they are unique in that unlike mere storage facilities, they provide an appropriate and relevant information service aimed at enabling the users to find subjects of interest and meet their needs appropriately.

The Information/Resource Centre's roles therefore are: To

  • Provide the required information for the smooth running of the organisation’s programmes and activities
  • Increase information storage (print, audio and visual) that is relevant to the NGO sector in general and DENIVA Member Organisations in particular
  • Increase information collection, analysis, repackaging, dissemination and monitoring for purposes of impact
  • Promote research in order to maintain up-to-date information: Serves as a referral centre and networking platform
  • Facilitate information sharing and exchange, sharing of experiences and collaboration amongst its users
  • Enhance the appreciation of information as a resource in itself
  • Continuously assess the needs of the users and adjust strategies whenever necessary
  • Co-ordinate the publications of the organisation and other works worth publishing
  • Assist its user in acquiring skills to develop their own Resource Centres and to understand the role of information in development much better.
  • Co-ordinate the internal information flow within the organisation
  • Work with other information institutions to ensure relevancy in dissemination of information to the rightful users.
